2026 Distinguished Contributions to Science Education Through Research Award to Troy Sadler
Troy Sadler is a professor of science education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) School of Education and serves at the Thomas James Distinguished Professor of Experiential Learning. Sadler’s research focuses on how students negotiate complex socio-scientific issues and how these issues may be used as contexts for learning. He is interested in how issues-based learning experiences can support learning of science and development of practices essential for full participation in modern societies. He also explores questions associated with how teachers take up socio-scientific issues-based teaching, professional learning for supporting issues-based teaching, and the development of frameworks and curriculum for socio-scientific issues teaching. In recent years, Sadler has initiated a line of research focused on marine science education in both formal and informal learning environments. His work has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the Institute of Education Sciences, the US Department of Education, as well as local foundations and state agencies. Sadler teaches science education classes for preservice teachers as well as coursework for doctoral students. He also frequently contributes to professional learning opportunities for inservice science teachers. Sadler has served as an elected member of the NARST Board of Directors and recently completed a five-year term as Co-Editor of the Journal of Research in Science Teaching. Prior to his work at UNC, Sadler was a faculty member at the University of Florida and the University of Missouri and served as the director of a STEM education research center.
