As we embark on NARST’s centennial, let us renew our commitment to inclusive practices, re-affirming that our strength as an association lies not despite our diversity, but because of it.
In light of the NARST Code of Ethics, our organization reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the inclusion of diverse people, perspectives, forms of scholarship, communities, and nationalities, and opposition to oppression in all forms. At a time when geopolitical conflicts and international tensions stoked by governments and embedded in power dynamics deepen division, NARST reaffirms that its community is grounded in the pursuit of knowledge via ethical engagement and mutual respect. Inquiry, knowledge production, and scholarly collaboration across the NARST community transcend the constraints of borders, nationalities, and actions of governments, as its members uphold a commitment to human dignity.
The vitality and integrity of science education research depend on the meaningful participation of voices from across the world that engage with the multitude of crises and problems that education, and science education in particular, faces. Diverse epistemologies, lived experiences, and cultural contexts are valued by NARST because they deepen understanding, challenge assumptions, advance progress, and contest various forms of homogenization. Open exchange and discussion are vital for the growth of science education research.
NARST strives to foster spaces where all members feel welcomed and valued and none are excluded, where dialogue across differences is encouraged and cultivated, and where disagreement is engaged with rigor and respect. Moreover, clarity on the distinction between positions of individuals and scholars and of the governments under which they live helps us realize an ethic of care toward one another as we work to promote equity, justice, and freedom at multiple levels across complex educational and research landscapes.
