Gillian Bayne Candidate Statement
Gillian U. Bayne
Candidate for NARST Director at Large
Institutional Affiliation: Lehman College of the City University of New York
As a longstanding member of NARST, and as a scholar who has taken on a variety of leadership roles, I am well suited and qualified to serve as a member of NARST's Board of Directors. It would be an honor to help the science education community through this role. My vision for NARST is that by employing our members’ ideas, expertise, imagination and ingenuity, science education can be transformed in ways that more immediately allow for the highest quality of benefits from our efforts.
I hold an M.S. in Science Education from New York University, and both an M.Phil. and a Ph.D. in Urban Education within the specialization of science education, from The Graduate Center of the City University of New York. My research has always been grounded in equity through a sociocultural lens, while centering on diverse perspectives, and lived experiences.
My grant-funded research includes having served as a PI on a NASA STEM Educator Professional Development grant, and as a CoPI on two NSF Robert Noyce Grants totaling $2.4M. I serve as an interdisciplinary collaborator on a $26M NSF grant researching and developing streetscape applications that use advanced wireless technology to strengthen livable, safe, and inclusive urban communities.
