Scott Cohen candidate statement
Scott Cohen
Candidate for NARST Graduate Student Coordinator
Institutional Affiliation: Georgia State University, Atlanta, GA, USA
Greetings, thank you for considering my candidacy. NARST is experiencing a rising number of graduate student memberships, and NARST is recognized as a vital pipeline to grow future leaders for the organization. Suppose I am selected as a Graduate Student Coordinator for the 2023-2025 term, I will represent the graduate students and early careers on the NARST Board of Directors in their best interest to expand scholarships and opportunities for developing scholars to establish their scholarly works. My goal consists of supporting our graduate students in developing their sense of belonging in NARST to grow their expertise as educators and researchers. My lived experience as a scholar with a disability will provide invaluable insight to the NARST Board of Directors on creating spaces for scholars from different walks of life to feel invited and included in the organization. NARST recognized the importance of bringing people together from different viewpoints, but more work is needed to establish spaces for these people to challenge the status quo in science education. My commitment to making NARST a more inclusive space will be my contribution to NARST while serving as a Graduate Student Coordinator. Thank you for taking the time to read my nomination.
